There are many advantages to contracting in the clinical research industry. Examples include diversified clientele, schedule flexibility, therapeutic specialization and independence. The more seasoned you become as a contractor, the more experience you gain over a wide range of working environments and phases of clinical research.
If you are already an experienced research professional, contracting is a viable option to specialize in certain areas of clinical development and add flexibility to your schedule. Contracting is also an excellent option for the experienced individual looking for work on a part-time or flexible basis (in order to combine with the responsibilities of maintaining a personal schedule).
Contracts usually vary from 3 months to one year and often result in the opportunity of a permanent position if so desired. If you contract through a recruiting firm, benefits such as insurance (health, disability and liability), 401K and employment tax may be provided in addition to your wages. In most cases, you as the contractor will be responsible for the costs of the above-mentioned items, and if so often results in a higher hourly wage.
If at any time you decide to work exclusively as a contractor, it is recommended that you first speak with a legal and financial professional in order to outline your obligations as a self employed individual or corporation.
